This study has two objectives: (1) to determine the characteristics of effective teaching from the point of view of higher education teachers; and (2) identify their understanding of this concept. The authors attempted to achieve these goals through a survey. Twelve university teachers, from the life sciences department of the science faculty, were asked to respond to a qualitative questionnaire. The results allowed us to list 23 characteristics of effective teaching. Their distribution into categories, allowed us to conclude that the teachers constituting our sample adopt an effective teaching concept centred on the student.
